I've seem many people around complain about the choice of Halle Berry to play Storm in the movies. What do you guys think? Was she a good choice? Would some other actress be better suited for the role? Who?

Personally I like Berry, I just think that the writers really didn't know what to do with Ororo with so many characters around - namely Wolverine and Jean. I feel like the movies didnt' do justice to our goddess!

I agree with you 100%! I think they started to do better in the third film though.

I tend to like Halle Berry. I think there's something compelling about her when she's on screen.
That said, I don't think they did justice to Storm in the movies (although I agree they did better by the 3rd film).
I know fans criticized Berry for not having the physical attributes to play Storm. She's not tall enough, her features are wrong, etc. And let's not go into the fact that they couldn't figure out what to do with her hair and decided NOT to give her blue eyes. I know that Angela Bassett was another name bandied about when they thought about casting for Storm. I lay part of the blame on Bryan Singer, the director. I heard he forbid them to do research on their characters and didn't let them read the comic books (if you remember they wouldn't let the wind rider ride the winds in the 1st movie). Partly, I think so the characters could be his take on them (and not based on the comic books) and to have a fresh start. BUT thankfully, someone slipped Hugh Jackman a few of the comics, which is why his portrayal of Wolverine is so much better than the other portrayals. I can't imagine anyone else playing Wolverine now even though initially they also criticized that he was too tall.
So altho Berry could be a better Storm, I don't blame her for it.
And right now I think the big plus to Rolo fans is that the chemistry between Jackman and Berry is very good (if you've ever seen Swordfish you'd know) so that might encourage the studios to get Rolo together.

Nope, Halle Berry was and is not a great choice for Storm, nor do I think Hugh Jackman was/is a good choice for Wolverine. Those were the two characters *that I think* are the most recognized X-Men and right off the bat they were the wrong height but I was willing to forgive 'that' and the bad wigs and horrid accent on Storm, but to not have her eyes blue, no, unforgivable and I've dislike Bryan Singer ever since (Well until he gave me House M.D. ).

Of course I watched and purchased the movies as I'm sure every fan of the comics did, but I have always said I thought they made piss poor choices for Storm and Wolverine.

If you listen to Halle talk about playing Ororo she really got the depth of the character, the psychology of the character and why she does what she does.
Which I hate to say surprised me, about Halle. Especially considering Storm was portrayed as not even a secondary character in the movies.
The thing with Halle (and I love the girl deeply, I've been known to see movies just on the fact that she was in it), is that I think she was a little too young to play Storm. I personally think they should've gone with someone older, and NOT Angela Basset *sigh* (woman pisses me off *sigh*).
What about Iman? Stan Lee wasn't exactly quiet in letting people know that was who Storm was based off of when she appeared in the comics in the 1970s, and have you see Iman walk outside of the Runway...Woman WALKS like a goddess should.

What about Iman?

Since Halle was in her mid to late 30's by the time the series of movies were complete I'd say she wasn't too young. She just didn't fit the role for me. I could see Angela 'if' that had totally reworked Storm's role in the movie, because Angela is such a 'strong' black woman and it shows in every roles she does. She couldn't have played the Storm that they had in the movie, maybe Storm in the third installment but definitely not one or two.

Now Iman, is the perfect look, but last I checked she was a model not an actress (yeah I know she was a a Star Trek movies and I'll repeat, She's a model 'NOT' and actress). So yeah if they put her in the movie and gave her nothing to say and not much to do...wait so I guess she could have done the role in Part one and maybe two...lol. Lord knows they didn't use Storm to the fullest.

As much as I think Halle was a poor choice for the role, at this point I honestly can't picture anyone else...well Maybe Nona Gaye (Marvin Gaye's Daughter), she's been perfect. So yeah Nona Gaye gets my vote. Someone has done a great pic of Nona as Storm.

@Pari -
I agree. I was not impressed by Bryan Singer (until he gave me House MD BUT it was HL and LE who gave me Huddy :) Their chemistry is like lightning in a bottle)
And Iman is certainly the perfect look for Storm but yes, she's a model and not an actress.
I think if it were to be made now, I can see Zoe Saldana as Storm.
But since they started with Berry, if they continue with the franchise then I say continue with Berry.

Here's my take on the subject.... Iman has the look but she isnt an actor and most model's attempt at acting is often nothing but a big fail. Acting wise Halle is a goos choice( had they actually gave her some screen time) but lookswise, Im not sure. I get why some people think she didnt do Storm any justice.....but I dont think it was her fault. If the writer/director etc actaully gave her something to work with she would have been ok but they didnt....I felt that the 1st n 2nd hec even 3rd movie was centred on Jean and Wolverine and the actoress who did Jean was beyond terrible lol I think the actress kinda influenced my dislike for Jean. Idk, I just felt that it was all about Jean and her "poor me, I wish both guys stop fightening over me, I dont know who to choose" whereas Storm was at best a background character.

I hate watching the original X-Men movie now. Since I'm in the process of rewriting the movie and adding my own flair, when I watch the original X-Men movie, it seems so drab in comparison to what I've written. There's a lot of plot holes. The characters are a shell of their former selves, especially Ororo. The thing is, I can't really blame Halle for what happened to Ororo in the first two movies. I honestly think she made the most of the part that was written for her in the script. The problem is, they didn't write shit for Ororo. They delegated her to not even a secondary role but a minor role. She had as just amount of importance to the story as Toad or Sabertooth. So it's like I can't hate on Halle for that, Singer is really at fault because he didn't care enough about the character to try to allow her to bring more to the plate. I think if they put as much or more importance in Storm as they did the third movie, I think overall Halle would have pulled it off a lot better.

Another reason I can't hate on Halle for the role. (She's amazingly hawt!!!) Also, if you look at all the leading black women in movies today, to be honest Halle Berry is going to be on the top of that list regardless. She's the only real leading black woman with any real star power. So it's like even if she might not physically fit Storm's profile, I think they were giving some importance to the character. It's like if they were making a "Black Panther" movie and they hired Denzel Washington for the leading role. Sure Denzel isn't the choice I'd make, but has enough star power to give some sort of credibility to the role.

Oh yeah, Whedon naysayers. This was his idea for the first X-Men movie.

Whedon claimed his script was rejected because of its "quick-witted pop culture-referencing tone". Only two dialogue exchanges from his draft appeared in the finished film. One of these scripts kept the idea of Magneto turning Manhattan into a "mutant homeland", while another hinged on a romance between Wolverine and Storm.

Ditto NoWhere_Man!

While I think the cast wasn't the ideal one it sure had a lot of respected/famou/charismatic actors. To me biggest problem wasn't Anna Paquin cast as Rogue, but the way they made her a substitute for Jubilee. If you want a Jubilee storyline, just use the character! She already exists, no need to use someone else to fit the role of Logan's "daughter".

The exact same thing goes with Storm. She is not an extra, you f******!!! Give her something worth of the character! Seeing the movie now only makes me sad too. All I can think of are all the lost possibilities...

I've been thinking about it now. And I think when Marvel is finally finished with their movie contract with Paramount and they roll into Disney films. I know many people are dreading this eventuality. I'm thinking that this might be a good thing, because it might be our chance to get a reboot to the X-Men franchise. Which will include trashing the current Movie-verse mess and hopefully producing a movie that is actually true to the source.

Funny, I was just reading an interview of Stan Lee and they were asking about Whedon and Disney.
He thinks Whedon will do a good job. He knows Whedon will protect the characters.
As for Disney, he's excited about it and the interviewer asked him what he'd like to see rebooted and Stan Lee said Hulk....Hulk?? That's been re-booted twice already!
And he's going to show up in the Avengers movie.
It's too bad that Avengers doesn't have a strong female lead. Whedon would rock that.
I was so disappointed when I heard he wasn't going to make the Wonder Woman movie.
I'd like to see a re-boot of the X-Men franchise. and for God's sake...give Storm something to do!

I honestly think if they reboot the X-Men and have Whedon at the helm, that would be the movie to watch.

Well I personally don't think it could be done 'worse' than it already has been. As for Wheadon I'd say yes in a writing/producing capacity, but not as a director.

Really? I think he's a bit untested as a movie director (Serenity being the only movie he's directed so far) but he's done some awesome work directing TV episodes. Some of the best Buffy episodes were directed by him so I think he could do a good job with a big budget movie.
