Q: I just registered, now what?
A: You should receive a password in the email address you provided within the hour. Log on and change your password using the "Edit Personal Information" page.
Q: I never received an email with my password!
A: Make sure the email did not go into your "Spam" folder. Make a special filter in your email account to make sure of this! If the email isn't there, contact a moderator to reset your password. Include your correct email account to make sure it wasn't entered incorrectly.
Q: I forgot my password and haven't received an email. What do I do?
A: Please use email Pari to request a new password. Include your pen name and the email you are registered with. DO NOT CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT!
Posting
Q: How do I post an image to my story? Can I just put it in the story text field?
A: Upload your picture to a image hosting service like photobucket, imagefilez, freeimagehosting, etc. In order to post properly you should drop the links attached, use 'ONLY' the html image tag, like so
< img src="URL" width="650" height="250"> *without the spacing between < and img *. And then post it in the textarea, above the actual text of your story. Banners cannot exceed 650x250 pixels due to layout and size constructs. OPTIONAL: You may use height or width in the image tag.
Q: I get an error page when I try to post my fic. What am I doing wrong?
A: If you try to post a fic and you get an error page stating you don't have permission to access the page, its because your fic has the word 'c-u-r-l' in it. This is a security glitch that some use to Hack into a server *for more info go here*...Because of this possible security our host doesn't allow the word 'c-u-r-l', so if you are using it change it to 'curled', 'curling', or 'curls' please. This will fix the problem.
Q: I submitted a chapter, but I don't see it on Recently Added, what gives?
A: If you are a new member, your chapters must go through a validation process.
Q: What is the validation process?
A: Special mods are alerted to look over the chapters in the validation queue. We check for spelling and grammatical mistakes. If there is a severe problem with your chapter, you should receive an email explaining what is wrong. This process could take 5 minutes or days depending on availability of the moderators.
Q: It's been a week since I've submitted a chapter and it still has not been validated!!
A: Check with the mods for the status of your fiction.
Q: My chapter is not 1000 words, what do I do?
A: If it is a drabble or poem, contact the mods to post it for you, include your penname with the request. If it is a chapter, wait until you can combine it with another chapter to make the 1000 word minimum.
Q: When I submit a chapter, my quotation marks are messed up! How can I fix this?
A: If you are copying & pasting from a word processing program, try to copy and paste it into a simple notepad program (usually standard on all computers) and then re-copy it and paste into The Spuffy Realm.
Q: My chapter was declined because it has too many mistakes. The email suggested I need a beta. What is a beta?
A: A beta reader is a writer?s best friend. Sometimes an author cannot "see" mistakes in their work. Betas edit for spelling, grammatical and punctuation mistakes. Depending on the comfort level of a beta, they may be able to help you with your characterization and plot lines.
Q: How can I get a beta?
A: It's hard getting a beta when you haven't been published, but it can be done. The JoVan Archive doesn't currently have a a section for requesting betas. Use the tagboard to find people that are willing to be a beta or people that are looking for a beta. When emailing a potential beta, you may want to include a sample of your writing so the beta can judge if they are willing to help you.
Q: I'm so frustrated, I can't find a beta and you won't publish my chapters! What more can I do?
A: You can do editing work yourself. The Jovan Archive has a built in Spell Checker on the "Add New Chapter" page. Microsoft Word and other software has an excellent spell checker and grammatical checker. Re-read your chapter: does it make sense? Take it line by line if you have to. Make sure you use capitalization and punctuation (a BIG sign that you haven't used a beta and will most likely be sent back to you). When your chapter is validated, mention in an 'Author Note' that you need a beta.
Q: What is the rating system mean?
A: It is a standard system similar to the one used for movies and music to let the reader know how graphic the language and topics are in any given story.
U: Unrated
PG: contains no violence, sexual content or mature language
15: may contain mild violence or mature language
18: may contain violence, mature language or mild sexual content (ex. innuendos, implied sexual content, not graphic)
NC-17: may contain graphic language depicting violence, sexual situations or mature language
AO: Adults only, may contain controversial issues
Plagiarism
Q: What is plagiarism?
A: Simply put: taking someone else's work without permission. This includes continuing a story without original author's consent and taking someone else's story (even from a different fandom) and changing the names. The Spuffy Realm does not condone the practice. The author will be banned permanently, and added to our 'Hall of Shame'.
Q: Isn't fan fiction plagiarism?
A: Generally yes, without the express written consent of ABC it is copywriting infringement to write fanfictions."
Q: I think someone is plagiarizing, what should I do?
A: Contact the mods immediately with your suspicion. Please include the location of the original work, the original author, the suspicious work and suspicious author.
Miscellaneous
Q: I hate the ads, how can I get rid of them?
A: To keep The JoVan Archive free to use, we need to utilize the use of the ads. Your support of the ads is greatly aprreciated!
Q: The JoVan Archive looks different. Did you change the layout?
A: There are many layouts available to use. Every once in a while the layout changes, but you can get your favorite one back. You can use the drop down menu 'Choose Skin' on the main page under 'Interesting Info'. For a more permanent solution, you can also set your account using "Edit Personal Page" to a default skin every time you log on.
Q: I was reading this story, but can't remember what the name of it was, how can I find it?
A: Have you tried the "Search" page? If the story has something unique you may be able to find it through there. An alternative is to ask on the 'Chit-Chat' board located on the main page, someone will reply as to whether they know the fic or not, and will even post a fic if they have one.
