Not really. But Marvel wants to sell this character and try to convince us that he's as worthy of attention as Captain America or Iron Man or any of the other Avengers. They've been packaging him as an Avenger in the cartoons, even though he was never technically on their roster in the comics, only someone who "worked with them" once in a while. Having him marry Storm got people's attention, certainly, and put him in more households, but... bleah.
His character was always too kitschy and silly for me. He always seemed like a Batman ripoff and embraced too many stereotypes with his whole "jungle-themed" powers and moniker. The villains he fought were even kinda stupid; Man-Ape? Really? White Tiger? Klaw? Pfffftt...
If Wakanda is one of the most technically advanced nations, why is it that the land is still so rural looking and people are carrying spears at his palace? Why are there still "natives" running around half-dressed? They're still stuck in the sixties and seventies and embracing the same narrow views of Africa, so this doesn't appeal to me. I don't even like Wesley Snipes that well. Never have. If they want to get Djimon Honsou, then I might watch it on DVD. If Marvel wants to do this movie properly, I hope they will film some of it on location and feed the economy of wherever they produce it. I also hope they use lots of African people as extras.
...and I hope they don't get Storm wrong. Seriously. She sucks in the Black Panther comic. Can you say "trophy wife?" |
