As Good As It Gets
John paced nervously in the lobby of Evangeline's apartment building.He had been
rehearsing for days what he wanted to say,but he didn't think she would believe
him.
Finally he said to himself."Stop being so afraid and just go tell her what's in
your heart."
He got in the elevator and hit the button for her floor.
When the elevator doors opened he was staring into the beautiful brown eyes
of his Evangeline.
"Hey."she said
"Hey,are you in a hurry or can we go into your apartment and talk?"he asked
She hesitated for a moment,but curious as to what he wanted she finally agreed.
They went back in,she closed the door and John started pacing again.
She looked at him and said."Typical John always saying he wants to talk,but
then he just remains quiet.John,what do you want?"
He turned to her slowly and said."I've been seeing a therapist.I had to get my
life fixed.I've been messed up for so long and I just wanted to feel whole again.
She looked at him shocked and said."John that's wonderful,but why are you
telling me this?"
"Because one of the reasons that I wanted to feel whole again is so that I could
finally tell you what I've wanted to tell you for over a year."
"Oh and what would that be,John?"she asked
"I love you and you make me want to be a better man."he answered
She looked suspiciously and said."John don't say that.I can't take you saying
something that I know isn't true.You don't love me."
"Did you once tell me that I don't say anything that I don't mean?If that was
true then,why would I start now?I told you that I love you,because I love you."
She searched his face and saw the truth."You're not lying.You really do love
me."she said
He smiled and said."Yeah I do.Now the question is,do you still love me?"
She hesitated for a few seconds and then said."Yes John,I still love you.I never
stopped loving you,but what about Natalie?"
"Natalie was my safety net.She was my way of not having to face my past.She
also fueled my hero complex.I was never in love with her.I know that I screwed
up not telling her about Cris,but I was always taught that if you promise
someone something you honor that promise.I should have told you from the
beginning about it and I'm sorry.I just want to start over and make things work
with us."
"If I give you another chance,you have to promise me two things."she said
"What are they?I'll promise you anything."he said hopefully
"First,no more secrets and second we share our lives the good and the bad
parts."
He smiled and said."Agreed."
She smiled and said."Ok McBain,you've got your second chance.You better
not screw up this time,because in this case the third times not the charm."
He smiled and said."Evangeline,can I kiss you now?"
She laughed and said."You better."
He walked over to her,took her face in his hands and gave her the most passionate
kiss either of them had ever had and they both thought to themselves.
"This really is as good as it gets."
