Phantom Love
It was Halloween and all of Llanview had come out for
the annual Halloween masquerade ball at the Palace.
John hated these things but Michael and Marcie talked
him into going.
He walked in wearing his Phantom Of The Opera
costume feeling really stupid.
Michael and Marcie both looked at him noticing how
uncomfortable he looked and Michael said."Johnny
will you relax?You look great."
"Well I feel like an idiot."John said fidgeting with his
costume.
They had been there about ten minutes when Evangeline walked in on the arm of Todd Manning.
John couldn't take his eyes off of her.She looked so
beautiful.
He did a double-take when he looked down and noticed she was dressed as Catwoman.
Michael saw him staring toward the entrance
and looked to see what held his interest.
"Hot Damn E looks amazing."Michael said
"Yeah she does.By the way Mikey your wife is giving
you the evil eye."John said smiling.
"I'm sorry honey.You look amazing too."Michael said
"Too late McBain.I hope you like sleeping on the
couch tonight."Marcie said.
Evangeline spotted Michael and Marcie and decided
to go over and say hi.
"Hi Michael.Hi Marcie.I love your costumes."Evangeline
said smiling at them dressed as Mickey and Minnie.
"Thanks."Marcie said."You and Todd look great too."
"Thanks but Todd won't speak to me because he claims that the Phantom doesn't speak.So I don't know how much fun I'm going to have with a date that won't talk."Evangeline said laughing.
When she walked over John turned and pretended to
be speaking to one of the other party-goers.
As he stood there listening to what she was saying
he realized that could help him.
Finally Evangeline said."Oh Todd's waving me over.I
think he wants to dance."
She waved goodbye and walked back over to Todd.
Just then Blair walked up to John and said."My don't
you look hot tonight Lt.McBain."
"You look great to Blair."John said smiling.
Blair was standing in front of him dressed as a
dominatrix in black leather from head to toe.
"Why thank you John."Blair said turning so he could
get the full view."How about a dance?"
John smiled and said."Sure why not."
He took her hand and they walked out onto the dance
floor.
Blair kept trying to gauge John in conversation but all
he could do was stare at Evangeline.
Finally she said."Hey why don't we work together tonight?"
John looked at her confused and said."What are you
talking about?"
"Well you help me get to Todd and I'll help you get
to Evangeline."
John looked at her nervously and said."I don't know
Blair."
Blair laughed and said."Come on McBain.You can't
just stand around and stare at her all night.Where's
your courage and determination?We have to fight for
what we want."
"Ok what do we do first?"John asked still not sure
if they should go through with it.
Blair thought about it for a second and then said."
You go wait in the coat room and I'll go tell Evangeline
that Layla needs to talk to her.I'll keep Todd busy
and you do your job.Oh and John spill your guts.Tell
the woman you love her."
John laughed and said."Oh I intend too.There is no
way in hell I'm going to screw up this time."
John headed for the coatroom and Blair walked over
to Todd and Evangeline to get things in motion.
"Hey Evangeline I just saw Layla and she wanted me
to tell you that she needs to talk to you.She said to
meet her in the coatroom."
"Oh ok.Thanks Blair."Evangeline said and then headed
for the coatroom.
She stepped into the dark room and saw a shadow
in the corner."Layla is that you?"
"No it's me Van."John said stepping out into the light.
"John.What's going on?Blair told me that Layla wanted
to talk to me."
"She's helping me.I needed to talk to you and I knew
you wouldn't come if you knew it was me."John said
"John what do you want?I need to get back to Todd."
Evangeline said frustrated that she was being played.
"You look amazing tonight."John said not really sure
how to begin to say what he'd been wanting to say
since she ended their relationship over two years ago.
"Thank you John.You know that was one of the things
that you never had a problem with during our relationship.You could always say the flowery words but when it came to anything meaningful you were in your own words never good with the words.This is a waste of time."she said and turned to leave.
"I love you."John said
Evangeline turned and looked at him shocked."What
did you say?"
John stepped closer to her and removed his mask."I
love you.You know I haven't said those words to anyone except my mother and brother in over twenty-five year."
"Wait what about Caitlin?You were engaged."Evangeline said
"I know and I loved her but I never told her.After my
dad the part of me that was able to express his feelings died too.I never told Caitlin that I loved her.I didn't have to because she knew.I showed her.You were different.Hell you're different from any woman I've ever known.I wanted to say the words to you.There were so many times I tried but they just wouldn't come.Then when I had my accident last year I swore to myself that I was going to start living and stop hiding in the past and in my fears.When I came back to Llanview you were still with Cristian and then you ended things with him and started seeing Todd.I didn't want to mess that up for you."
Evangeline looked at him angrily and said."Why now
then John?Why tell me now?I mean you just said
you didn't want to mess things up for me.Why is now
so different?"
John threw his hands up and said."You want to know
why, fine I'll tell you.It's because I realized no matter how happy you seem that we belong together. We're each other's soulmates.That's why.I need you and you need me.Please Evangeline can't we give it one more try?"
"Damn you John McBain.I waited a year for you
to tell me you loved me and it never happened.Now
two and a half years later I've finally found someone
who makes me happy and you're ready to declare
your undying love to me.Well it's too little too late."
Evangeline turned to leave and John said."Do you still
love me?"
"What?"she asked
"Do you still love me?"John asked again.
"John I've moved on.I'm with Todd."
"That doesn't answer my question.So answer the
question counselor.Do you still love me?"
"Yes damnit.Yes I still love you but it doesn't matter.
It doesn't change anything."
John smiled walked over to her and said."It changes
everything."Then he leaned down and captured her
lips in a kiss that he'd wanted for over two years.
Evangeline put her hands to his chest pulled back
and said."We can't do this.I have to get back to Todd."
John smiled and said."Todd is in good hands.He needs to face the fact that he is Blair's destiny just like I'm your destiny."Then he pulled her into another kiss
while he reached behind her and started unfastening
her costume.
"John what are you doing?"She said trying to stop
him.
"I'm getting my life back."John said
Soon they were both naked on the floor of the coatroom.
John had just entered her when he heard."Oops sorry."
They looked up to find Todd and Blair standing there
with Blair's lipstick smeared on both of their faces.
Evangeline and Todd both looked at each other and
said."I guess we're back where we belong."
Todd and Blair left to go find another quiet corner
and John looked at Evangeline and said."Why don't
we go get a room for the night and start our future."
She smiled and said."That sounds like a great idea."
They got up got dressed and went to start their future.
